The Purpose Within
Find what matters to you, and build your days around it.
The Purpose Within helps you identify what genuinely matters to you and make choices aligned with your values, your interests and the contribution you want to make. It does not hand you a mission. It helps you find the one you have been carrying.
Where you might be
By most measures, things are going well. And some mornings you still catch yourself thinking: is this it?
Or the opposite. Nothing is quite working, and you suspect that is because you have been building a life around what you were supposed to want. The job that made sense. The path that was expected. The goals you borrowed from people who seemed to know.
Purpose is a heavy word. It sounds like something handed down from a mountain, reserved for people with callings. For most of us it is quieter than that. It is the thing you would do if nobody was keeping score. It is the problem you cannot stop noticing. It is the kind of help you find yourself giving without being asked.
You probably already know some of it. It has been showing up in what you read, what makes you angry, what you lose track of time doing, who you wish you could help. What you may not have is a way to gather those clues and turn them into choices.
The Purpose Within is that way.
The possibility
What becomes possible.
Imagine being able to say, in one plain sentence, what matters most to you. Not what should matter. What does.
Imagine looking at a decision and knowing quickly whether it fits. Imagine the relief of saying no to a good opportunity because it is not yours, and the energy of saying yes to something that is.
Imagine a week that contains, somewhere in it, the thing you are for. Not a career change, necessarily. Sometimes it is an hour. Sometimes it is how you do the work you already have. Sometimes it is who you decide to help on a Tuesday.
That is what this program makes possible. A purpose small enough to live and true enough to trust.
What you develop
What this program helps you develop.
- 01
A clear set of values
The handful of things that matter most to you, in your own words and in order.
- 02
An honest energy map
Knowledge of what gives you energy and what drains it, gathered from your real weeks rather than from a test.
- 03
A reading of your clues
The patterns in what you notice, what you care about and how you already help, assembled into a picture.
- 04
A purpose statement you can use
One or two sentences, written in the present tense, that describe what you are for right now.
- 05
A decision filter
The habit of checking choices against your values and your purpose before you commit.
- 06
Contribution you can name
A clear sense of who you want to help and how, in a form that fits your life.
- 07
Permission for purpose to change
A way to revisit and revise your purpose as your life moves, without feeling you have lost it.
How it works
How the experience works.
The structure of The Purpose Within is proposed and has not been finalized. The outline below describes the intended experience.
Gathering clues
You begin by collecting evidence from your own life: what you value, what energizes you, what you notice, how you already contribute.
Lessons
Short lessons from Tyson E. Sam on values, purpose as practice rather than revelation, aligned decisions and contribution.
Reflective practice and experiments
Written exercises leading to a purpose statement, followed by small real world experiments that test it.
Community
Meetups and a discussion space where members share their purpose statements and the experiments they are running.
Companion app
Values, energy map, purpose statement and decision log in the BreakThru Mindset companion app, which is in development.
Inside the program
Topics and practices.
- 01
Values in order
From a long list you choose the ten that matter, then the five, then the three. You write what each one looks like in an ordinary week.
- 02
The energy map
For two weeks you note what gave you energy and what drained it, at the end of each day. You read the pattern.
- 03
What you cannot stop noticing
You list the problems, injustices, questions and needs that keep catching your attention. You ask what they have in common.
- 04
How you already help
You write down the help you give without being asked, the advice people come to you for, the things you do well that others find hard.
- 05
The purpose draft
You write one or two sentences in the present tense that describe what you are for. “I help people feel less alone in hard seasons.” You revise it until it feels both true and slightly too big.
- 06
The decision filter
You take three decisions you are facing and test each one against your values and your purpose draft. You notice how quickly the answer becomes clear.
- 07
A purpose experiment
You design one small way to live your purpose this week. An hour, a conversation, a change in how you do existing work. You record what it felt like.
- 08
Purpose over time
You write what your purpose was ten years ago and what it may be ten years from now. You practice holding it loosely.
Who it's for
Is this for you?
You are successful by other people’s standards and still asking “is this it?”
You want to find out what your own standards are.
You feel like you are drifting
Days go by, competently, in no particular direction.
You have a sense of your purpose and cannot act on it
It feels too big, too vague or too impractical. You want it sized for a real week.
You are in a transition
A career change, an empty house, a retirement, a recovery. The old purpose has run out and the new one has not arrived.
You want a purpose that is not a job
Something you are for that does not depend on an employer.
You are a person of faith looking for how to live it
You hold a sense of calling and want practical help translating it into choices.
A view of the transformation
Before and after.
Your choices are made by default, by expectation or by whichever opportunity shouted loudest. Purpose is a word for other people. You have clues and no picture. Good opportunities drain you and you cannot explain why.
You have three values in order and can say what each one looks like on a Tuesday. You know what gives you energy and you have arranged more of it. You have a purpose statement you have tested in small experiments and revised at least once. Decisions are faster, because you have something to check them against. You have said no to at least one good thing because it was not yours. Somewhere in your week there is now an hour that is clearly what you are for.
This is what practice can make possible. It is not a guarantee, and purpose rarely arrives as a single revelation. What you gain is a way of finding it and a way of living it.
Why this program
Why this program exists.
BreakThru Mindset asks people to become intentional about how they live. Intention needs a direction, and purpose is where direction comes from.
The foundational journey touches purpose in every stage, from the vision in Grateful & Becoming to the contribution in I GIVE. The Purpose Within is for the person who has realized that purpose is the question underneath all the others, and who wants a focused season to answer it. It addresses a specific need: the gap between a vague sense that there must be more and a clear, practical statement of what you are for.
Questions
Common questions.
What if I do not have one big purpose?
Most people do not, and the program does not expect you to. Purpose here is a clear sense of what matters and who you want to help, sized for your actual life. It can be an hour a week. It can be how you do your existing work. The program is suspicious of purposes that are too big to live.
Do I have to quit my job or change my life?
No. You can finish the program and keep the same job, the same house and the same relationships, lived differently. You may also decide to make changes. The program helps you see clearly enough to decide, and it does not push you toward any particular decision.
What if my purpose has changed?
Then it has done what purposes do. The program treats purpose as something you revisit as life moves. The last practice is specifically about holding it loosely, so that a change feels like growth rather than loss.
I am retired, or caring for someone, or in a season where my options are limited. Does this apply?
Yes. Purpose is not about options. It is about what matters and how you live it where you are. A clear purpose statement does not need wide options. It needs clear values.
Is purpose religious?
It can be, and it does not have to be. If you hold a sense of calling from your faith, the program gives you practical ways to translate it into daily choices. If you do not, the program works from your values, interests and contribution. It makes no claims of its own about where purpose comes from.
Do I need to have completed any other program first?
No. The Purpose Within is a focused program you can take on its own.
Join the Interest List
You already have the clues. What you have been missing is a way to read them.
The Purpose Within gives you one: values in order, an honest map of your energy, a reading of what you notice and how you already help, a purpose statement you can test, and a filter for the decisions ahead. Find what matters to you. Then build your days around it.
Join the Interest List and we will let you know when the program opens.
