Principle 5 of 6
Environment & Identity
The BreakThru Method connects environment and identity: arranging your space, routines and inputs so they reflect who you are becoming makes the right actions easier and reinforces your new self-image.
Your environment is constantly voting on who you are. The objects in view, the routines you follow, the content you consume: each quietly reinforces an identity. This principle helps you design surroundings that support the person you are becoming, not the person you are leaving behind.
Identity first
Lasting change is easier when it starts with identity. Instead of “I'm trying to read more”, try “I am a reader.” Then ask: what does a reader's environment look like?
Make the right action the easy action
Put your journal on your pillow. Leave your running shoes by the door. Remove the app that steals your mornings from your home screen. Small changes to your surroundings remove friction from the habits you want and add it to the ones you don't.
Curate your inputs
What you read, watch and listen to becomes part of your inner conversation. Choose inputs that are aligned with your vision, and notice how your thinking changes.
Exercises
Practice this principle.
The environment walk-through
20 min- 1Walk through your home and workspace as if you were the person you are becoming.
- 2Note three things that support that identity and three that work against it.
- 3Change one thing today: move, remove or add something.
Identity statements
5 min- 1Finish the sentence “I am the kind of person who…” five times, in line with your vision.
- 2Choose one and identify a daily action that proves it.
